O'Grady's parents include Jim O'Grady who is a financial advisor, as well as Jan O'Grady. She was raised in Wheaton and attended Wheaton North School. She graduated in 1981. She appeared in a few commercials prior to making the move to Los Angeles in 1986. Career O'Grady started her career as the model of Montgomery Ward, and well performing commercials in a variety of ways. She began her career on screen in the romantic drama Having a Baby in 1988. She later played a prominent role as a recurring character in ABC Drama China Beach alongside Dana Delany. The actress has also appeared as a guest and appeared on independent movies and television shows. Donna Abandando was her first major role on ABC's police show NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the big-haired team secretary on ABC's NYPD Blue between 1993 to in 1996. Every year, she received Emmy Award nods for Outstanding Actress for the Drama Series.
