O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while at high school. She made it to the top tier of contestants when judges applauded her voice. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges, however she was a victim of significant loss in the Top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted to the bottom three or second-bottom two places and bottom two, respectively. Judges were amazed at her performance and recommended viewers to select contestants who sang well like Melissa. O'Neil wasn't in the top 3 after an impressive string of performance. Her performance on the 7th of September of 2005 was awe-inspiring that judge Werner predicted the newspaper headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil was immediately congratulated by Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
